Acromioclavicular Joint separation

 It is commonly caused by a fall directly on the shoulder or a direct blow received in a contact sport. It is a separation of the clavicle and the acromion of the scapula. 

 

Causes:Fall landing on the shoulder (A shoulder throw in Judo)Direct blow to the shoulder or Fall on Outstretched hand 

Symptoms:

Pain and swelling around the jointPain on movement of the arm

A bump may be present over the injured joint

Diagnosis:

Radiographs: Xray of the the Acromioclavicular joint will show separation of AC joint. T

Treatment:Treatment of AC joint separation depends on the type of separation, occupation that requires overhead activities

Type 1 to 3: conservative management Ice Anti Inflammatory Medication/Pain MedicineRest/Immobilization with Arm slingPhysical Therapy as soon as pain subsides 

 Type 4-6: Surgical ManagementThere are varieties of surgical method used to treat AC joint separation. The common principle is restoration of the coracoclavicular ligaments using different types of stabilization devices with excision of the distal end of clavicle.
